Accessibility statement

https://halbonlabs.com targets conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. Accessibility is part of the same checklist every build runs through before release, rather than something checked at the end.

Every page on this site is checked for:

• Automated accessibility violations. The current build reports none across all pages.
• Colour contrast, measured on every piece of text against the colour actually behind it rather than the colour we intended. All text meets AA.
• Keyboard use throughout: a skip link, a visible focus outline on every control, focus that follows the page rather than jumping about, and a menu that can be opened, moved through and closed with the keyboard alone.
• Layout from 320 pixels upwards, with no sideways scrolling. Every button, menu link and form control is at least 44 pixels square, on phones, tablets and desktop alike. Links inside a sentence are the size of the sentence, which is what WCAG 2.2 asks for: making them taller would break the paragraph around them.
• Reduced motion. If your device asks for less movement, nothing on this site moves, and no content is hidden waiting for an animation that will not run.
• The page with JavaScript switched off. Every section, and the enquiry form, still work.

It has not been independently audited. We assess this site ourselves using automated tools and manual keyboard testing. We have not commissioned a third-party audit, and we do not claim certification.

We have not tested it with people who use assistive technology daily. Automated checks and our own keyboard testing catch a great deal, but they are not a substitute for someone who actually depends on a screen reader. If that is you and something here is awkward, we would genuinely like to know.

Links inside paragraphs are smaller than buttons. WCAG 2.2 allows this for links in running text, but they can still be fiddly on a phone. Every link that matters also appears as a full-sized button somewhere on the page.

The soft colour behind the pages is decorative. It is hidden from screen readers, it does not move, and if your browser cannot draw it you get a plain dark background instead. Nothing is communicated by it.

If any part of this site stops you doing what you came to do, email hello@halbonlabs.com with the page address, what you were trying to do, and what you use to browse. That last part helps more than anything else.

We read every one of these and reply. If it is something we can fix, we will tell you when it is done; if it is not, we will tell you that plainly rather than leave you waiting.

The accessibility regulations that apply to public sector websites do not apply to this one. We publish this statement because we think it is the right thing to do, and because we would rather be told about a problem than not.
